Step 1Who is appointing

Section 78 of the Building Act 1993 says the building surveyor must be appointed by the owner, or by the owner’s agent. A builder cannot appoint on the owner’s behalf — they can only recommend.

Signing here appoints our surveyor as the Relevant Building Surveyor for this project. It is a formal appointment under the Building Act 1993.

Before you start

The owner has to sign. A builder can recommend a building surveyor but cannot appoint one — that's section 78 of the Building Act 1993.
Use the owner's name as it appears on the title, and list every owner.
One line on what's being built is enough — "new detached garage", "single-storey rear extension".
You can authorise an agent (a draftsperson, a builder, a family member) to lodge and deal with us for you.

What happens next

You and the office both get the signed appointment by email straight away.
We confirm the appointment in writing and tell you what documents we need.
If you haven't done the permit application yet, that's the other form — start there next time and this one fills itself in.

About signing on screen

Signing here is a formal appointment under the Building Act 1993, not an enquiry. We record the date, time and connection the signature came from, and email you the same document we keep, so you can check it says what you intended.
